What about antibiotic use ?

Although the government managed to reduce by 21% the use of antibiotic drugs in France between 1999 and 2004, this consumption does not change over the past five years (Afssaps).

Sales of antibiotics have stabilized around 30 daily doses per 1,000 inhabitants. In 2009, this represented 157 million boxes sold for a turnover of 852 million euros, and a cost of 556 million for health insurance.

Campaigns implemented by the Ministry of Health since 2002 have partly paid off. France is no longer the champion of antibiotic consumption. She is now in second place, first place occupated by Greece.

The stakes go yet the only gains expected for Social Security. This is primarily against the development of antibiotic resistance. Indeed, this threat, the therapeutic arsenal continues to decline.

“During the period 1999-2009, the number of antibiotic substances available in France fell by 15%, from 101 to 86″
Afssaps

In ten years, 25 substances have ceased to be marketed, while only 10 new ones were launched.Fears are particularly strong in Europe about 25,000 deaths each year are associated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including 4,200 in France …

Complicated contraception reimbursement in US…

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has opposed a compromise presented byBarack Obama, for reimbursement of contraception. The reform of U.S. health care system imposes indeed now to repay such expenses.

Due to strong opposition from lobby groups, however, the government had offered to businesses run by religious institutions, as some hospitals, and supposed to offer from 1 August 2013 health coverage to their employees, not to include this reimbursement, which would be supported by health insurance companies.

This proposal, however, quickly rejected by the bishops. ”The only solution to the problem of religious freedom is that the Ministry of Health repeals these shocking provisions” can be found in a news conference.

What is the future of pharma business?

Yesterday, I again discussed with a friend about the future of the pharmaceutical  industry and its future business models. We asked ourselves critically:

How will pharma business grow sustainable in future or decline in its core business? Which position or role will it take in todays&future Healthcare Society? What could other addiotinal subcore businesses can be? Sometimes we need to ask ourselves the right questions before finding a solution:

We can say that in many health and profit promising diseases, more accurately common diseases like in MT,CNS and Pain relief… has been researched, basically enough and there is no real market anymore…., which stil could be interesting for pharma? Or solving diseases for humanity? So whats about inventing more diseases? More diseases, more products, more profit? Pfizer has tried it with FDS (Female dysfunction or better said Viagra for women) or other multis who launch “Mee-too’s” as high innovative solutions…for…?  yes for what? For existing indications. As we could also use Generic products?

A long chain of industries and business are addicted to pharmaceutical  business today, which is, on the first view not really conscious. In addition  I can mention that numerous services do exist needs pharma! Where is the money…?
Market research companys, CRO (Contract Research Organizations such  as drug delivery companies), marketing agencies, contract manufacturers,  e-health organizations, or the whole infrastructure of hospitals & insurances.

I guess it is complex enough, to explain all the “players” in a healthcare system in context of future pharma business including their relationships in between.  Now it should be clear, although we may see the dark side of healthcare in  pharma, many players bound and need them. So lets speculate, new research projects in genomics and gene-technology,  personalized medicines, anti-bodys instead of new chemical entities, with companies and products like in process innovation “Thinking design” and IDEO…success?..No its not promising but may showing a new direction helping to innovate? But innovation means not entrepreneurship…!

Many factors and no solution? A major trend I observed in many cases are the optimization and maximum usage of existing technologys. E.g. eveluating  further succes of existing products with improvement, an example: Gx to SuperGx, which may show potential in markets like US. I think it must be invested in drugs and research projects, why not investing in some dreams humanity had over decades: Increasing human intelligence, human memory, brain power, immunity, beauty, power, against aging and resistance…!

Is this maybe the way pharma should go? Or stay on core routes like researching for Onco, CNS… in a healthcare service environment and not lifestyle ..?

Activia, a Danone product containing Bifidobacterium lactis

Danone has just finished a clinical study involed over 150 children. The goal was to show that the Bifidobacterium lactis (DN-173 010) was effective against constipation in children. Now, after three weeks, with two yogurts per day, there was no difference between the group who received the probiotic and the other.

“It is not sufficient evidence to recommend the consumption of probiotic yogurt containing this fight against the problems of constipation in children”

The study was conducted in the Department of Gastroenterology and Nutrition Pediatric at Emma’s Children’s Academic Medical Center Hospital, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Accused of false advertising by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in late 2010, particularly for extolled the beneficial effects on constipation regarding the product “Activia”, Danone had already had to pay $ 21 million fine to settle the dispute.

In Europe, the revision of the system of health claims had already prompted the suspension of its claims about Activia and to review its positioning and marketing. Recall that the European Commission announced in late September 2010, in a press release,

“its intention to reconsider the process of gradual adoption of the list of permitted health claims for food”

Will “EHEC” create a further “smile” to Pharma business?

EHEC (Enterohämarrhagische Escherichia Coli) are certain pathogenic strains of intestinal bacterias, which posibily leads to deadly bloody diarrhea.

EHEC in cucumber ?

EHEC in cucumber ?

The infection is very dangerous and must be treated very quickly because the further stages of the disease could lead to failness of the kidney functions. STERN reported immedialty that the number of deaths in Germany has risen now to seven persons. A 38-year-old woman who came on thursday evening into the hospital of Kiel had serious complication with HUS, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, “She died unfortunately”, a hospital spokeswoman said Saturday. “The woman was admitted several days earlier at a very critical stage for us”. Middle of last week for the first time a man died at the current EHEC infection. The person was founded death in his Hamburgs apartment when a first human tested positive for EHEC. The man was discovered lifeless after his employer had reported him missing.

Overall, within about a week to Friday, about 1,000 confirmed EHEC infections were registered and the number is expected to rise. The treatment of EHEC, depending on the stage of the desease is complicated. A treatment of the infection with antibiotics is not ver success promising, as there are resistant quickly. This increases the excretion of the bacteria and the disease can be exacerbated by increased toxin production. The treatment is symptomatic. The complications (HUS and TTP) must be treated intensively, for example by hemodialysis and hemofiltration in the form of protein exchange in human body.

Can this mean a positive sales potential for big pharma or is this discussion here unethically? There are already some rumors like discussed in the past with swine flu like, big conspiracy theories from big pharma…? Is it again another new invention to increase the sales?

However, fact is EHEC is very dangerous and people must pay attention to their vegetable food, the infection have been identified in lettuce and cucumbers from Spain. What means that the spain farmers remain on their crops, and have to carry thus enormous costs.

They are present in thousands of cosmetic, food and medicines to prevent the growth of fungi and micro-organisms that could be harmful to humans. The Conservatives also aim to prevent drug degradation and declining efficiency, or avoid its harmful effects.

On 3 May, the french deputies adopted the law proposal Yann Lachaud to prohibit the use of phthalates, parabens and alkylphenols, three classes of endocrine disruptors, against the advice of the french government. The text must still be approved by the Senate before being applied, but concern is growing already in the pharmaceutical industry, which would have to find substitutes.
